History

The De Bortoli story started in 1928 when Vittorio De Bortoli, an Italian immigrant, began making wine in Bilbul, NSW. What began as a humble family operation quickly grew into one of Australia’s most well-known and respected wine brands. Vittorio’s passion for winemaking was passed down through the generations, with each family member adding their own touch to the legacy.

The business took off in the Riverina, but over time, the De Bortoli family expanded into some of Australia’s most premium wine regions, including the Yarra Valley, King Valley, Heathcote, and of course, the Hunter Valley. Today, the third and fourth generations of the De Bortoli family run the show, with a strong focus on sustainability and innovation while staying true to their Italian heritage.

Wine Varietals

De Bortoli’s Hunter Valley range reflects the region’s strengths while also showcasing their signature Italian influence. The wines here are made with a mix of traditional techniques and modern winemaking, resulting in a collection that’s both accessible and refined. Here are some of the standouts:

  • Semillon – The Hunter Valley’s claim to fame, known for its fresh citrus notes and incredible aging potential. Expect crisp acidity, lemon and lime flavours, and a clean, refreshing finish.
  • Chardonnay – A beautifully balanced style, with stone fruit, citrus, and subtle oak influence. Perfect for those who enjoy a full-flavoured white wine.
  • Shiraz – The Hunter’s go-to red, offering bold, spicy notes, ripe dark fruits, and a smooth, lingering finish. A must-try for red wine lovers.
  • Verdelho – A tropical, easy-drinking white with hints of pineapple, guava, and citrus. Bright, lively, and great for warm weather.
  • Rosé – Fresh, vibrant, and packed with red berry flavours. Made for long, lazy afternoons with good company.
  • Fortified Wines – De Bortoli is world-famous for their Noble One Botrytis Semillon, a luscious dessert wine that’s won countless awards. If you love a sweet, rich, and complex drop, this is a must-try.

De Bortoli’s commitment to sustainability means their wines are produced with minimal intervention, organic practices, and a focus on long-term environmental responsibility. So, when you sip a glass of their wine, you know you’re supporting a winery that cares about the future.
